I basically agree in "you can have it either good or fast". :)

However the cumulated time to align masks in relative terms of a fabbing cycle is probably not of significant relevance. Add a whole day for this and it is still noise in a three-month cycle. Although it would certainly require couple of tools more and consequently a tad more cleanroomspace. But in the context of a mulitbillion fab that is peanuts as well - at least not if the design of the fab accounts for this in terms of equipment brought in. In short, if planned it would neither raise costs nor cuts down throughput versus expectations.

And yes, if you are a year ahead in manufacturing technology, while you are always at risk because you will hit the walls first, usually not everything goes awry, so I would not be surprised if there is more than just this area where Intel is indeed way ahead of everybody else.
