I saw that they did relieve the Captain pending the hearing. But that is precautionary anyway. If I were him, I would plan on retiring, unless he is a technical "waterwalker."

Satelite images show an underwater peak at 7.6 N by 143.5 E,
and another at 9.5 N and 144.1 E.
I would expect the captain would know about those and stay clear, more likely the sub hit an unmarked one.
