i was just looking for Michener's Covenant, sure i've still got it somewhere .

Two very interesting novels on the British/Boer aspect of S. Africa were written by the author Francis Brett Young. "They Seek a Country" and "The City of Gold". Both long out of print, but I googled and found both at:

alibris.com

They follow a poor British youth sentenced to transport for poaching, and a Boer girl through the great trek, the Zulu wars and the discovery of gold and the subsequent mining boom. Very sympathetic look and both sides. Not so good at showing the black side however, so don't have expectations of that.
