Perhaps you missed the part earlier in the article where Jay Marvin spent $10,500 for private investigators.

Since the foundation of Marchese's case was built on Pugs' posts, Dr. Shell knows those better than anybody and seemed like the logical choice to compile those.

Research is research. Whether it's Marvin paying for investigators or Marchese paying for investigators.
