They aren't disillusioned, unfortunately, for if they were there would be hope of a cure. What should really scare you is that they want a totally different type of world than you do- and their idea of "freedom" includes "freedom" brought to you with an American bullet, and "tolerance" that has tolerance only for people who think like the majority...

It's one vision of this country, and it's not the kind of vision people who aren't part of the right will enjoy. Luckily there are probably more than 2.5% of the people who voted for Bush who WILL change their minds about this vision of American, when they start to see Bush attempt to put it in to place. The election was 49 to 51, and lots of those people believed that Iraq had WMD and that Iraqis were involved in 9/11. As terrorism becomes less of an issue, and as the scope of the price of this war becomes more evident, I think the number of people who support the Bush agenda will fall precipitously.
