Pete, Certainly there is a substantial set of investors that do buy and hold. In fact, if an investor does nothing after putting their money into a 401K, it is "buy and hold" until retirement. Most of my colleagues take this approach. So I claim the "politically correct" form of investing right now is Buy and Hold with occasional rebalancing. If I weren't listening to Bob, I would probably be doing buy and hold.

I generally listen to the commericial-free version of Moneytalk so I haven't heard exactly what Bob said yet. But it is not surprising that there are gurus that shun market timing. In fact advocacy of buy and hold is a form of attack on market timing. I have heard many times that it is impossible to do market timing.

So I agree there is a church of buy and hold.

Pete, I also believe there is a church of buy and hold. It's not just that the view is widely expressed but it is expressed vociferously. This buy and hold group doesn't count traders, they just see them as different animals. But as far as long term market timing they believe it can't be done successfully and long term investors who flirt with the idea are risking likely disaster and and a loss of potential net worth due to the time lost from not holding.

Wouldn't many of us belong to that denomination if Bob wasn't so successful at long term market timing?
