January's impact on U.S. stocks inescapable in 2005
For investors hoping for a bounce back from current lows, it could be bad news. A down January has predicted a down year for stocks 10 out of 17 times, according to Standard & Poor's data.

And with just six trading sessions left in the month, including Monday, the tally could as well be 11 out of 18 times after 2005. In 14 trading sessions for the month through Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 have logged just five days of gains, while the Nasdaq Composite index has eked out just four.
