He did on rare occasions get near the edge of nasty. I saw one Tonight Show in the 60's with Arnold Palmer's wife as a guest. Johnny asked her if Arnold was superstitous and did they do anything for his golf tournaments? She replied that before every tournament she would kiss his balls (golf balls of course). Johnny was laughing hysterically as he looked into the camera and said, "I bet that makes his putter stand up".

The next day she sued him and NBC to prevent that incident ever being reshown or copies made, etc. She won, too. Years later when the "Best of Carson" video tape set was sold to the public, Mrs Palmer's appearance was never even mentioned.

There various versions of that story around, but I saw it happen live and I remember it like it happened to me last night.

He was sure a class act. I've watched a few of the late night wannabe's and they just don't have what it takes.
