Hobsbawm is pretty far left and regarded as something of well liked museum piece by much of the British left.

We get to see if armies can spread democracy in the next year or so, first act happenig Jan. 30.

An article in Foreign Affairs has pointed out that -

1) The Bush administraion doesn't have much of a plan B id elections don't help Iraq.

2) The old Europeans (France, Germany, etc.) don't have much of a plan B if elections do move Iraq towards a democracy of some type - they get the reputaion for opposing democracy in the Arab world.

If Iraq becomes more stable, big winner will be Turkey, a large trading partner.
