Let's just say I'm in "show me" mode - and I'm not alone. The only way to ever know if Abbas could crack down is to see him do it. Otherwise, you must assume that the last move always belongs to Hamas & Hizbullah.

Wonderful analysis showing how BBC presenter and big cheese Jeremy Paxman changed his tune on the danger of Saddam and his WMDs. In 2002, he wrote a book charging that Saddam was an unprecedented danger; by 2004, of course, he like the rest of the Beeb, denies that anybody ever thought Saddam was dangerous and "Blair lied!"

The crucial difference is that in a 2002 book (written in 2001), the charge against Saddam could still be used as a charge against the West; once Bush picked it up, it became a pro-American argument, so the Beeb dropped it and forgot they ever supported it.
