Makes sense, and maintaining monopoly position is worth the price of the "spare" fabs.

A side benefit is that Intel can justify crushing flash prices on overcapacity, and warn of underutilization charges if fabs are idle, instead of cranking out flash below cost.

They want to insure that even a yield bust such as they experienced going to .18um will never in the future prevent them from supplying at least 85+% of the market.

Sorry but no such yield crashed ever happened.
