I was reading about this in early 2002. You might recall that FBI agent Colleen Rowley (one of Time Magazine's Women of the Year for 2002) appeared before Congress on June 10, 2002 to discuss the FBI's shortcomings in investigating Zacharias Moussaoui, a purported potential hijacker and flight training school student. He was practicing of large aircraft simulators.

Of course, if you were relying on the corporate media (or NPR/PBS) you'd never have learned this fact at the time, because John Ashcroft buried it with hysterical non-news about the arrest of Jose Padilla.
