There was a fad a long time ago in England to hire folks to live in your large manor garden and be hermits. It was kind of like having a live lawn gnome. One wealthy lady insisted that her hermit contemplate a skull in his little cave, whenever one of her guests was walking by.

The hermit had to live in the garden for 7 years in order to earn his retirement money. And he had to live in the garden in all weathers. I say "he" because as far as I know, there were no lady hermits hired. This job was discussed in the fascinating UK program "The Worst Jobs in History" to which my entire family became addicted.
