The indictment and the facts lead to the conclusion that AP and his unindicted co-conspirators through the RICO enterprise they hatched at the site and on boards for example the AP thread here corrupted the FBI agents, not the other way around. Or did Royer, Wingate et al come looking for the shortin' sheeple with FBI info all on their own?

I think Royer most certainly did, and that's something the jury got badly wrong. Unless all the journalists reporting on the case were wrong, it appears that Cleveland was Royer's original "friend" in the marketplace. They teamed up, and promptly started losing money. Subsequent to that, Cleveland suggested that he pass information from Royer to Elgindy.

Unless there was some testimony that the journalists missed or failed to report, I think Tony was unfairly convicted on that count.
