Clinton and his Republican Congress made some good progress (reversed now). So there is hope... we will need a crisis (forthcoming IMHO) to get some political responsibility, and if it doesn't kill us, it might make us better sometime in the future. re: So, will intellectualism ever make a come back (I refer to well thought out and discussed theories), or is intellectualism gone for good. People are too busy to "think." The one line slogans rule America. We've gone consumer as a country. Marketing dictates the course of action, not intellectual thought based on information, but paid advertisers (or paid lobbyists) decide our future. Well said. re: Btw, did anyone ever thank you for paying for their children's school tuition by way of your tax money? How can a person complain about paying taxes while in the same breadth not say thank you for a benefit they obtain from a tax, especially when asked to show some level of appreciation? Yes! One person did. I'm not sure of the level of sarcasm, but I said "you are welcome" anyway. It was sort of nice, made me feel good. re: But if the govt introduced a military draft, then we'd see a lot of people get involved. I second that, and I know from experience. It's amazing how the threat of death can bring political clarity. re: Here's my take on Congress - there isn't a soul that represents people in my age group (as far as I know, okay there might be one or two people), so you've got a situation where boomer congress is laddling my generation with more and more debt, while not considering our well being whatsoever. Check out Barack Obama. Cool dude. Maybe not quite your generation, but getting close. In the next 10 years your generation will start "coming of age" to get elected. The process seems to dictate that you have to pay your dues before you can run for high office, and that takes time. I often wonder if the two party system has failed us, and changed politics into a marketing scam without substance. If we had a half dozen ligitimate parties that had to compromise to get power, we would probably get much better decisions. And we would certainly get a more lively and intellectual debate. John
