I can tell an English bulldog from a German shepherd just by looking at them, too, but, there is also only one race of dogs. ;^)

Scientists used to hypothesize that some were descended from dog-like animals other than wolves, but genetic testing recently demonstrated that this hypothesis, while reasonable, was false. All dogs are descended from wolves.

There is only one species of dogs. And dogs are one of the stellar examples of high phenotype plasticity due to very extensive human breeding (often to the determent of the dog)
