The explanation when I worked at Club Fed is that having a diverse workforce enabled us to better serve our customers (that's another thing that drove me nuts, we weren't allowed to refer to taxpayers as taxpayers, they were "customers").

Presumably if a McDonalds has an equal proportion of whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, gays, hindus and inuits on its payroll it will produce a better Big Mac.
