Let's face it athiests are bucking the tide. They certainly are not conformists, which implies that there is a thought process behind their decision.

Right or wrong, you have to admit they are not taking the "path of least resistance".

There is very much critical thought that you have to do on your own. I allow myself to be called an atheist by people who believe in a personal god and are devout.... By my reasoning I can get beyond that point, but I can't explain or conceive what created the universe, therefore I'm agnostic..

Why do most missionaries and proselytizers go to 3rd world countries to spread the gospel?
