I suppose he got heavy into the penny stock shorts long after I was gone.

Yeah, that became a trend in 2001 and led to my departure from the site as well. It got to the point where having an "overseas" account became practically mandatory to get any value out the bulk of the calls. Which was another layer of irony, in that there was still tons of money to be made on the short side of mainstream, readily borrowable stocks.
