I am not totally clear about the rules of the Swiss military tax. I remember only being subjected to it for 2 years after emigration. I therefore haven't paid any for more than 20 years.

Swiss culture has similarities to an island culture as the Swiss identity was shaped significantly by their wars with the surrounding major powers, i.e. the Austrians, Germans and French. Through these wars (all won except for one) they developed quite a reputation as warriors only to learn that bravery in the face of technology is not wise (the cannon marked the end of Swiss adventurism). Combined with few local resources, mercenarism became a major source of income. You can still see the remnants of that in the pope's Swiss Guard.
