NEW YORK (Reuters) - Philadelphia Eagles receiver Terrell Owens's surgeon has told the All-Pro player he should not play in next month's Super Bowl, but the doctor said Owens had insisted he would be in the game.

``I'm not releasing him medically,'' surgeon Mark Myerson of Baltimore told The Philadelphia Inquirer after examining Owens's right ankle on Tuesday.

``He's not medically fit to play. However, he has done extremely well in his recovery and his rehab, and he feels he'll be able to play.''

Whether he plays in the Feb. 6 game, though, was going to be a team decision, Myerson told the paper.

``Owens feels he can play and he's going to accelerate his rehab,'' he said. ``He understands the risks. They've been discussed extensively. At this point in time, he wants to take those risks and play.''

The Eagles would not comment on Myerson's recommendation but Owens, who had surgery on the ankle on Dec. 22, was still hopeful.

``Spiritually I have been healed and I believe I will be out on the field regardless of what anybody else says,'' he told reporters Monday night.

Myerson said he understood the receiver's feelings.

``He is caught up in the excitement and the heat of the moment,'' he said. ``Everybody wants him to be able to play, but in the long run, it's not going to benefit him.''

The Eagles will be without tight end Chad Lewis when they face the New England Patriots in Jacksonville, Florida. The team announced on Monday that Lewis, who caught two touchdown passes Sunday's win over the Atlanta Falcons, would miss the Super Bowl because of a foot sprain.

Philadelphia signed retired tight end Jeff Thomason to fill Lewis's spot on the roster.
