It was the American revolution that sparked the waiting powderkegs of European democracy. Most history books will even talk about that. They acknowledge that alot of foundational ideas began in Europe (imported from Greece), but that the bold new thinking occurred in the U.S. After the American Revolution, French soldiers who supported the Americans, went back to France very unhappy with the state of their own government. That accelerated their progress to "Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood". As for Britain, they had experimented with parliament for centuries, but the monarchy always had the power to disband parliament. After the American Revolution, the parliament gained increasing amounts of power, drawing on the American example of rule by the people, until the monarchy became only a titular head.
