That wasn't your reaction in the sense that you don't see socialized health care as inevitable, or in the sense that you don't think the author of the article thought it was inevitable?

I think the author did think it is inevitable or at least extremely likely. I don't really agree.

I'm not embarrassed to say that I balk at the notion of paying $33K per person to extend life for a year.

Many decisions are made for higher costs then $33k per day. A life is often valued by courts or bureaucracies at millions of dollars. Assume its $3million and the person has 40 years left to live that is $75k per year.

I can definitely see the argument for balking at having the government pay the $33k per year (esp. if it is for a lot of people), but I'm sure that many people would disagree with it. To the extent that they do disagree with such balking you might have a greater push towards socialized health care. Hopefully we can resist such a push.
