Ken; I found this interesting. I didn't think that this was true ~yet~.

China, Hong Kong Surpass U.S. as Japan's Largest Trade Partner

Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Japan's combined trade with China and Hong Kong exceeded that of the U.S. in 2004 for the first time, the Ministry of Finance said, underscoring their increasing importance as a market for Japanese goods.

Total exports and imports to and from China and Hong Kong last year totaled 22.2 trillion yen ($214 billion), accounting for 20.1 percent of total trade, according to a ministry report released today in Tokyo. Trade with the U.S. amounted to 20.5 trillion yen last year, making up 19 percent of Japan's total.

Growth in China, the world's fastest growing major economy, accelerated to 9.5 percent in the fourth quarter, the country's National Bureau of Statistics said yesterday. The U.S. economy grew at an annualized 4 percent in the third quarter.

``The global economy has an extremely large impact on Japan's economy,'' Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said in parliament today. ``The firmly expanding U.S. and Chinese economies are a plus for Japan.''

Chinese demand for electronic goods including semiconductors helped bring Japanese exports to a record 61.2 trillion yen in 2004, the report said. Increased production in China by Japanese manufacturers also contributed to the rise in trade with Asia's second-largest economy, according to the ministry.

Japan's total imports also rose to a record last year, increasing to 49.2 trillion yen, the ministry said. Exports and imports to and from the European Union and Asia also rose to a record last year, according to the report.
