And this is what I'm not getting. Races are either fundamentally the same or they are fundamentally different. Assuming the same threshold for "fundamental," how can those two frameworks be the same?

If races are fundamentally different, then people have an excuse to discriminate. If they are fundamentally the same, there is no excuse. Even bigots feel that they need to rationalize their beliefs. In taking away their excuse, their basis for rationalization, why is that not a good thing?
