Byrd helped filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and also opposed the nominations of both black candidates for the Supreme Court, liberal Thurgood Marshall and conservative Clarence Thomas. Byrd and his colleagues believe blacks should not enjoy the same freedoms as white Americans-the freedom to work hard and rise to the highest level in the land.
