The federal system has a real problem particularly in the drug area. I detailed a case here last night where I know someone serving 15 years just for selling weed. It will be interesting to see where the feds go on mandatory minimums.

I don't think the jury found him guilty of defrauding any particular people. It's the market that needs to be made more fair, more even. Encouraging a level playing field and not one that benefits someone or a group that happens upon a corrupt FBI agent will play a part in the sentencing and future actions of the US Attorney.

The extortion conviction is the tough one IMO and the nature of the threats.

There was much discussion in the papers relating to instructions about fiduciary concepts and, to some extent, a person in that capacity has a higher duty to others.

The length of the sentence he is facing seems unjust to me. It is a non-violent crime and the people the jury found him guilty of defrauding were participating with full knowledge that their investments were highly speculative ... it's not as if he was robbing grannies of their social security checks.
