You guys seem to be forgetting that *Intel* also has a rather large set of single core offerings that they need to sell for good prices in 2005.

RE:"I´m willing to bet that INTEL will push Smithfield with a big marketing campaign, stressing the areas where it will be useful (video+audio de/encoding, some content creation stuff, "multitasking" etc.), reviewers will develop/use scripts/benchmarks that will stress the advantages and they will become a part of the standard testing suites, the INTEL benchmarks like Sysmark will greatly respond to a second core, etc., and all this combined will create
a dual-core hype that, relative to their prices ($250+), could make them sell well in 2005, and distract attention from single cores, where AMD should be fairly strong (especially price/performance). It wouldn´t be the first time. P4 should also benefit thanks to a greater emphasis on the apps mentioned above which like Hyperthreading."

Exactly. Intel will again play the benchmark and numbers game. Especially the 2 cores is better than 1.

It's so obvious and AMD seems oblivious as to what to do to combat it.

Keith, about anyone needing dual core can pay for the more potent dual core FX (it will not be the kids that need it nor most of their fathers). Plus gamers will want dual core FX too, or be in the market for single core. Smithfield is still an odd puppy. Hype, imo, won't cut market shares, because AMD has several things to offer in that same market. Centrino + marketing was rather different as it offered consumers something AMD so far can't match for as far as battery efficiency is concerned that is (and it has been some time already).

Regards,

Rink
