I am viewing the iraqi mess from a strictly american perspective and disengagement is what we should be after imo. Pull back to defensable position and then outtahere. We are where we were in vietnam back in 1966 when escalation took over. Bush/Rummy hopefully will have more sense than LBJ/Mac. I am hoping civil war will be limited by sunni baath/nationalist/jihadi split up post elections as tribal leaders try to participate in new iraqi order. Shiaa like sistani can have a calming influence and al sader can supply some muscle in protecting shiaa from sunni attacks.
