I don't know. Ho Chi Minh had the whole red menace thing going again him. It would have been hard for the US to see a red menace brand revolutionary as a fighter against imperial tyranny. So I just can't even evaluate the idea- because I think for the time, it was probably an impossible idea for most people to have. Poor Kennedy probably would have done a better job evaluating the whole thing, though, if the China hands in the state department hadn't been purged due to Mc Carthyism.
