The same issue would apply to law enforcement in the United States. Our police daily arrest people who potentially have information that could be valuable and could save a life. Why not authorize the police to beat the crap out of people they believe might have valuable information -- maybe a few well placed electrodes or a few fingernails, or a shattered foot might loosen those lips - why not? Answer: Because we don't want to live in a police state.

You say we went to Iraq to free the Iraqis from Saddam's police state, complete with his torture chambers. Then you start to get cute about how if we come to town and establish a police state and reopen the torture chambers it is ok, because what? Because we are from out of town? Because we come with "good intentions"?
