I was still trying to figure out how CB and I got off on the wrong foot over the race/ethnic debate

It was your use of "mongrelization," John: To make mongrel in race, nature, or character. That is an old time racist "fighting word," used to oppose "miscegenation:" The interbreeding of different races or of persons of different racial backgrounds.

The word hit me that way too, and I almost called you on it. But I felt, upon reflection, that you meant no harm by it. I felt you used it in the same context as I would if I said, "I'm a mongrel," to make a humorous reference to my mixture of Irish, German, French, etc, BG. You can use it to describe yourself, but don't use it to describe someone else.

When you discuss race of ethnic BG, it is very easy to offend. I am surprised that the discussion went as long as it did on this thread without someone taking offense.

If I misunderstood you, I apologize.

Your friend sounds like a sensible person, and I am glad that you talked to him, and shared his insights.
