As a society, we need a mechanism to protect ourselves from ourselves.
But that mechanism is not gov't.

refusing to serve someone in the "ten items or less" line who has thirteen items
A store is a private business. For most purposes, it can serve who it wishes to serve under the conditions it wishes to do so.

refusing to allow an adult bookstore to open up shop near a school
Closer, and a more complicated business. This gets into zoning laws, a source of much friction. Basically, courts have ruled that cities may adopt zoning ordinances that do not allow such businesses (and others) near schools, but may not ban them entirely.

boycotting "reality" shows that serve only to pollute the minds of our youth.
You as an individual have the right to not watch what you choose to. Same as that store owner can make rules for running his business.
