Or so I remember from something Bernard Malmud wrote- perhaps in The Fixer. I associate it with that. And I remember the Jewish women had to bathe specially and were unclean during their periods. Now I got that somewhere else- because I hadn't known about the communal Jewish baths- Katerskill Falls maybe? Oh well, somewhere. Don't know if it's right, just know I read about it.
