Hello Snowshoe, <<I fear we'll be faced with two horrible choices:

1) Go back in to the populated areas to rescue the newly-elected government from imminent collapse; or

2) Pull out and watch the place descend into warlord hell like Beirut, Somalia, and Afghanistan.>>

You needn't fear. You will have sampled, repeatedly, both choices, again and once more, before somebody somewhere decides to negotiate, only to find that there is actually no one to negotiate with, unlike in the case of Vietnam, and then have to do the old 1 & 2 again, before finally realizing that perhaps, however unpalatable, the best course is to leave it all behind, at which point we will be blessed with USD 250/barrel oil.

As to ... <<the Beau Geste images you conjure up are so refreshingly comical compared to the reality I dread>> ... I think this is pretty much the situation of the Japanese garrison down there in the sandy plains, holed up in their base, just waiting, to go home.

Chugs, Jay
