The stories I heard made a shift in me from a naive young girl into what almost was a nervous breakdown.

Now you are a 'naive old woman'.......What's the difference??

It is shocking, isn't it? I think what must happen, Suma, is that in order to kill during war, people have to change somehow. I know that I saw one documentary where the troops in Iraq were listening to very violent heavy metal music to get them pumped up to kill. Of course, once you have compartmentalized in order to brutalize, if your soul is dark atrocities like Mai Lai seem more understandable.

Personally, I have noticed in reading the obituaries of the local troops who die in Iraq that many of them were avid hunters and fishermen before they left. I wonder if men who hate hunting and fishing on principle and don't eat animals can be transformed into killers of men and people who commit atrocities during war as quickly. I am pretty sure no studies have been done on that subject, though.
