The term to search for is officially known as Electronic Patient Records (EPR). This is the term that is the buzz of the IT healthcare that the article is referring to. I haven't done a search yet - might get to later. I've done some research on this for my day job. As an aside , the need to secure these records and encrypt them is now mandated by laws such as HIPAA and others. This might be an interesting area of research for new investments.

Here are a couple of small Canadian companies in the computerized medical records field:

MDU - V
CSO - V
MSF - T

I like MDU a lot. CSO could be turning around here with new management and a very good product. The MSF I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

I owned a lot of MDTI from as low as $0.30. I'm not very pleased with the last set of numbers as it looks like their growth is slowing rapidly.

OPTO.OB has a EMR angle, they call it EHR....

Optio Healthcare Solutions Launches QuickRecord Suite at 2005 HIMSS Conference
Tuesday February 8, 8:00 am ET
New Solution Establishes Essential Foundation for Community-based Electronic Health Records

ADVISORY, Feb. 8, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) --

WHAT: Optio Software will launch the Optio QuickRecord
Suite at the 2005 Healthcare Information and
Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference
and Exhibition. QuickRecord Suite is a secure,
cost-effective way to provide physicians and
other caregivers with real-time access to patient
information across the continuum of care. Our
integrated electronic health record (EHR) solution
helps healthcare organizations reduce errors, waste,
delays and inefficiencies in clinical and business
processes, while improving patient safety and the
quality of care.

The Optio Exhibitor's Theatre (Booth No. 2911) at the
HIMSS conference will present ongoing demonstrations
of the Optio QuickRecord Suite, the fast affordable
path to a community-based EHR. The theatre will
also feature demonstrations of the Optio MedEx
Suite(tm) for powerful documents on demand and
forms automation capabilities, and Optio Imaging
Solutions for intelligent materials management data
and document capture, storage and retrieval.

WHY: As many as 225,000 people die each year as a result
of medical errors, making it the third leading cause
of death in the United States, according to B.
Starfield, "Is U.S. health really the best in the
world?" published in JAMA 2000. Adoption of digital
health record systems nationally could save the United
States an estimated $78 billion annual in healthcare
costs and reduce the number of deaths due to medical
errors by at least 70 percent, according to
"Secretary calls for $550 million health care fund
to reduce deaths by medical errors, Wisconsin
Technology Network, June 8, 2004. From appointing
national health information technology czar
Dr. David J. Brailer, to proposing seed funding for
EHR programs, the Bush Administration has made
healthcare and healthcare information technology
among its top domestic policy initiatives.

-- Optio QuickRecord Suite establishes the
essential foundation upon which a
community-based electronic record system can
be built. The solution provides a
subscription-based model that minimizes the
impact on capital budgets, while providing
lower total cost of ownership than monolithic
system replacement strategies.

-- The QuickRecord Intelligent Hub is based on
a distributed model for an efficient
community-based EHR. It indexes available
information rather than storing it in a
central repository, eliminating duplicate
data and the network load problems associated
with centralized approaches.

-- QuickRecord accommodates paper medical records
by providing forms automation and on-demand
scanning, and serving as a centralized
distribution point for documents via print,
fax and secure browser access.

-- A browser-based dashboard enables medical
records, clinical records, clinical staff,
financial services, physicians and their staffs
to access clinical information gathered from
disparate systems and paper documents and
presented in a Composite Patient View(tm) of
the medical record for an individual patient.

-- An e-signature module enables physicians to
sign care-sensitive documents. Physicians can
also enter online prescriptions (e-prescribing),
significantly reducing the burden of paperwork
on all parties, while increasing efficiency.

TIME/DATE: The official Optio QuickRecord launch will be held
4-6 p.m. on Mon., Feb. 14 during an invitation-only
Martini Mixer. Please e-mail juliec@optiosoftware.com
or sroehl@optiosoftware.com for an invitation to
this invitation-only event. Demonstrations/
interviews will also be available during 2005
HIMSS exhibition Hours, Feb. 14-18, 2005. A white
paper will also be released at the launch event
and available for download on the Optio website.
