Hi Elroy - HP was pretty big before the calculator.

I don't see the government contracts that HP had as being quite as juicy as the ones the Railroads (Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, etc.) got for building lines in the Western US.

Lots of fortunes do have crime behind them.

Maybe in France they ALL have great crimes behind them.

Next time I go to France I'll watch my wallet better ;-)

It's amazing how pro-govenrment Silicon Valley is when DARPA is handing out money vs. when the IRS want to collect it.

I'm having a hard time thinking of the crimes, unles you want to count Steve Jobs (maybe)selling dope before he founded Apple (What he did when he re-capitalized Pixar was pretty nasty)

Both Apple and Adobe got intellectual property from Xerox. Xerox East Coast management was dumb to some degree, but made money (Xerox owned 20% of Apple at one time, sold shares at a nice profit in a few years. Would have done about 20x better if they kept the shres for 5 more years)

As for Intel protection, our Japanese friends where subsidizing an attempted take over of the semiconductor industry. They won in DRAM, then the Koreans came in...

I'm really having a hard time seeing the crime and graft - and I have worked in marketing at some of these companies.
