China asks US not to interfere in human rights issue Jan 27, 2005 04:47:00 PM .BEIJING FES84 Beijing, Jan 27 (PTI) China today rejected US President George W Bush's preaching on the Communist nation's political system and human rights policies but said it hoped to make "new progress" in bilateral ties in next four years. Commenting on Bush's recent pledge that he would 'constantly remind' Chinese leaders to make progress on human rights front, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said that China does not approve of US interference. Claiming that China has made "solid" progress on the democracy and legal institution fronts during last year by enacting 88 laws and regulations, Kong said: "From this, one can see that China has made solid progress, taking solid steps to improve its legal system." "The pace has been really astounding. We have very firm resolve and confidence in improving our democracy and legal systems and we don't need any foreign interference in this," Kong said. Kong acknowledged there were differences between China and the US on human rights issue. "But differences could be reduced through consultations and greater understanding," he said, noting that Washington has made many such requests for such dialogue and China has sent an official to Washington for consultations on the human rights issue. "Both sides believe that this consultation was beneficial for greater mutual understanding," he said. On the appointment of Condoleezza Rice as US Secretary of State, Kong said Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Chinese Ambassador to the US Yang Jiechie have separately sent messages of congratulations, saying China hoped to make "new progress" over the next four years.
