I signed up with Vonage today. I reduced my Verizon plan to economy ( I was paying close to 70 dollars and now I am paying $15 basically to have 911 and my home security system is tied to this land line. Also the incoming calls will continue to be included in this fee structure as well). It has only been a day since I started using Vonage, but it seems to be good. If there are any issues with it, I have my cell phone to make the outgoing calls. I pay $25 for Vonage.

In your case, you could basically carry the adapter around to Australia and continue using the same phone number as long as you have high speed internet connection. International calls are also very inexpensive.
