Hi Karen,
I dont know about others here, but i am moved by the scenes of iraqis preparing to vote and those around the world who actually are voting already. Large turnouts are expected in secured areas controlled by Kurds and Shiaa. In the triangle who knows as a more and more desparate band of jihadis, thugs, baathists and foreigners try to fight the inevitable of a somewhat democratic iraq with majority shiaa rule or a de facto three state solution. Who knows. Today we got good news about zarquawi lieutenants in captivity. Bush is preparing an exit strategy in coordination with the new iraqi regime. Ted Kennedy is right. American presence has galvanized the resistance but of course what he fails to recognize is that american presence stands between iraq and the abyss. But post election, those sunni tribal chieftans will have to deal or face the prospect of either baath or jihadist rule in the triangle or a never ending insurgency or a rump sunni state destined for poverty--in short a new Palestine. I am somewhat optimistic that this will all turn out better than we now think if not as good as we once thought. Reality bites but it will also bite the terrorists and baathists and their foreign fighters. And a new iraqi regime asking us for support but in the background would be a good first step in the next couple of months so we can be out of there by 06 with fewer casualties in 05 than 04 as EMK calls for.
