It was strange. I think it was because he did such a good job he made the part look easy. It was a very low key role, and he was the canvas on which all the other characters played. It was unfair to overlook him. I think it was a real mistake.

Best movie of the year, though, is definitely Shaun of the Dead.

I thought Giamatti's role was pivotal--everyone else revolved around him. Yes, it's very disappointing. I thought Thomas Haden Church sort of hammed his role up a tad too much, as well. And I liked Cynthia Oh's performance as well. She is the director's wife, so I suppose she will still feel very good about the movie's success, though.

One interesting story about the film is that they concocted terrible-tasting mixtures of things like prune and cranberry juice to look like wine. Very nasty. So the actors asked and finally were allowed to drink the real thing instead.
