You should not oblige your enemy by allowing him to choose the battleground.Sun Tzu , The Art of War geocities.com That piece of war wisdom pointedly applies to the current global war (against terror) waged by the US. Here's how I make it out: The US war machine is allegedly invincible --an unchallengeable hyperpower capable of deploying itself towards any foreign theatre.... Just think of it: if some would-be troublemaker sought to challenge the US at sea, it'd be soon overwhelmed by scores of submarines, flattops, frigates, etc. The Japanese attempted it in the Pacific in 1941 --and paid dearly. Likewise, if you chose to defy the US in the jungle: the US has got enough defoliant and napalm to turn the thickest rain forest into a moonscape --nowhere to hide, US blackhawks and cruise missiles have enough firepower to mop up coverless moving targets.... (the Vietnam scenario) The desert is no better battleground --just ask the Iraqis or the Afghans. Any substantial move is spotted in real time by satellite and then fed into smart-bombs' brains.... So, what are we left with? Seems like no matter which battleground one picks to defy the US, it's a nonstarter... unless one shifts the challenge to the HOME front. The homeland itself is indeed the Achilles' heel of the US behemoth: if bombs start exploding at home, will the US loose cruise missiles at its OWN cities??? Will Abrams tanks roll across Park Avenue? Will bunker busters smoke terrorists out of Miami? Will the disused Alcatraz penitentiary be retooled into a domestic Abu Ghraib?
