I think plants are always a safe topic. Most people have something in their garden, and most people don't mind talking about that. What mystery did you read last? That's always a nice ice breaker- since mysteries aren't controversial. At parties I like to ask people about the movies they've seen and liked. That's usually good- as long as nothing controversial like Farenheit is out. Worst topics? Politics, religion and raising kids. Those are almost guaranteed to raise hackles, unless you are talking to someone who is just like you :-)
