But I see the statement about a nation ‘deserving defending’ not as a reason not to serve but as a commentary on a society whose citizens are not willing to defend it. I found your original point apt. We will, indeed, defend what we value. And we will do so based upon our individual assessments of that value and of the alternative. If we won't step up and defend it, then it may be that the cause is insufficient. There are some who are not capable of participating, some too cowardly, and some, as CB says, free riders. There still remains for the capable, the brave, and the responsible the question of whether the cause is sufficient.
