Re: Kerry/Elections/Iraq Kerry is way off base in his ascertion that internationalizing the effort in Iraq will stop the insurgency. Lets look at who the insurgents are: Former Bathists - They want the power back and are fighting to get it back. They dont care about what nationality they are killing to achieve their goals. Islamists - These guys (Iraqi and Foreign) want to defeat the US and the Iraqi govt. as their goal is to talibanize the world. They also do not care the nationality that they kill to reach their goals Criminals - Driven by money and power. They will also kill anyone Temps - For hire - Eaking out a living So Kerrys assertion to internationalize Iraq is wrong. First it is internationalized with many countries currently participating in the rebuilding of Iraq and 2nd the insurgents dont care who they kill to meet their goals including UN. The elections were a good start but most likely will not stop the insurgency one bit in the near term. What must happen to resolve Iraq? First, the training of military and police must be accelerated until this force is powerful and can retain order 2nd - Iraq is tribal - The Sunni tribal leadership must be brought into dialogue and coopted into the system. They must have a reasonable voice in the new govt. A format of governing must be drawn up that ensures a reasonable voice for all and ensures that the Shite dont just cram their will down everyone elses throat. The US congressional system ensures all states regardless of poplulation have equal votes whereas the house takes into consideration population. Iraq could do something similar. Or a model like Lebanon may be considered that ensures sharing of power. Once this is done, the insurgents will find their time short as the local population will inform on them once the tribal leaders get on board. The Islamists will be turned on first and fast. The Bathists will stop or be eliminated. Not easy but it must be done. This will most likely take a couple of years until it settles down. 3rd It would be nice if the press would not be so negative in their reporting. This only emboldens the enemy and gives them hope and costs soldiers lives. The alternative to the above is most likely civil war in which many people will die needlessly and the Sunnis will eventually lose. Regards Neil
