His deferment was broken up into parts because he dropped out of 3 colleges and transfered. And his time on deferment was prior to LBJ's massive troop buildup. He probably didn't even need a deferment since so few were called.

OTOH, John Edwards deferment was during the time of the buildup and he definitely would have been called.

There is no question that Edwards avoided service in Vietnam and Cheney didn't. It's all on the record and clear as day.

Cheney got his deferments at a time when more than 10 times as many men got deferments as got drafted. According to the LA Times, in 1966 5,200,000 million men got deferments - from July,1965 till June 1966, 343,000 men got drafted. According to the LA Times, Cheney also was given a 1-A status twice could have faced the draft (and could have been drafted).
