Palestinian sources identified the victim as Noran Deed. They said that she was standing with her classmates to enter the school in the morning when she was struck by Israeli tank fire from the military’s Termit post, about 900 meters away from the school. "She suddenly screamed and fell to the ground, bleeding. The girls started to run everywhere," one witness said. Medics at the Najar hospital in the Rafah refugee camp, where the 10-year-old girl was pronounced dead, said that she was shot in the head. The Israeli army said that it was investigating the incident, in which another girl was wounded. Palestinian security forces have been deployed across the occupied territories last week but they haven’t been based near the Termit post, local residents said. Correspondents said that Monday’s death, the second fatality in the Gaza Strip in two days, will test an unofficial ceasefire between Israeli occupation forces and Palestinian resistance groups. On Sunday, Israeli soldiers shot dead a 65-year-old Palestinian civilian whom they claimed was walking near an army post. Paul McCann, spokesman for the UN Relief and Works Agency, which runs the school, confirmed Monday’s fatal shooting. "This is the fifth occasion in which children in our schools have been hurt," he said. Last fall, two Palestinian girls were killed in separate incidents while they were inside their classrooms. McCann also said that a student has been blinded and another injured in the throat in recent shootings. Hundreds of Palestinian children and teens have been killed by Israeli forces over the past four years. The Israeli army rarely investigates the incidents.
