zofsilence...your quote though I might argue about whether or not they understand what it means

It's posts like this that convince me that liberals are so incredibly false in their public posture of caring for the people of the world. You dismiss the intelligence of the Iraqi people with one flippant comment. You think Iraqis who risked their lives to vote don't understand what democracy means? You think they don't feel it in their gut when they mark that ballot and know that they have exercised a freedom as fundamental as breathing air? Again, your true colors are showing and I'm not surprised to find that the ignorance and arrogance of the liberal left knows no bounds.

John was arguing on these threads just a few weeks ago that we Americans were "imposing" democracy on the Iraqis. What dogshit. The Iraqis looked death itself in the face just for the chance to reach out and grab democracy with both hands. The freedom and right to vote for your leader is no more an imposition than the right to breath and the Iraqis have proven that once and for all.

Take your bitter pill and swallow it. There's more to come.

I'm not arguing about whether or not they "want" a democracy (though I might argue about whether or not they understand what it means)

Another good point. Key differentiator of a democracy is the peaceful, orderly transfer of power. If you ask me, none of the interim coalition leaders should have been allowed to run in the elections, or at least not the top people. Then they would have seen that Allawi was given 8 months to run things, and then the baton would be passed to the next leader, and he shouldn't have run at the end of his term as well. Its the power grab that has the most potential to ruin the whole process, so showing ordinary people that the election was not a power grab by Allawi would have far outweighed the cost of having a new dude in office.
