I loved my PTF, too, but I sold it and put the money into ES, which I do recommend strongly at its current price. That's EGYSF on the pink sheets. It's a mutual fund now holding 16 of the trusts (including PTF), but leveraged, so that the capital shares get most of the income as well as any capital appreciation. One drawback is that it will be redeemed in September 2006. There is a second series, Energy Split II, (EN on the Toronto)but it is selling at a little too much of premium. Still, it will run for about 15 months longer than ES.

I had no trouble buying EGYSF with limit orders, very close to the current TSX quote.

Here's the information. You can also download prospectuses from SEDAR, the Canadian SEC site.

I also recommend COS.UN (COSWF) and also own the derivative, Oil Sands Split Capital shares (OST.UN). If all goes well with the tar sand developments, OST.UN (OSDSF pink sheets)could provide huge income and capital gains.

Lots of discussion of these trusts on this thread:

Subject 17783

Also on Stockhouse.

Forgot to mention that 100% of the large payouts of ES are return of capital, free of current taxes. Hard to get my US brokers to classify it that way, however, but am claiming it on my tax return. Lowers the basis of the stock so you pay capital gains on sale or redemption.
